Bon appétit!
Where is my food from? What is in my food? Our agricultural system is broken: unsustainable farm practices and a disconnection between consumers and the food we eat are at the heart of the problem.
- Technically all food is slightly radioactive.
- Pesticides are used in public health to kill vectors of disease, such as mosquitoes, and in agriculture, to kill pests that damage crops. By their nature, pesticides are potentially toxic to other organisms, including humans. The EU continues to export pesticides that it has banned for use and sale within Europe due to health and environmental concerns.
- Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms in which the DNA has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. In 2006, the five parliamentary parties formulated Hungary's GMO-free strategy and the process of implementation aimed at its realisation in complete agreement which is mainly based on scientific results that have proven the negative effects of GMOs. However for the biggest European food retailers only genetically modified feed is subject to GMO labelling, but not the food products made from it. FAO, WHO and a large group of experts concluded that genetic modification for agricultural purposes does not reduce hunger and poverty, nor does it help social and environmental sustainability.
Yet there is a hope for fixing the food chain in two interlinked solutions: food sovereignity and agroecology - approaches that shift agriculture in a more sustainable, local direction.
